Figuratively Speaking...
Last year, as part of the Detroit Society of Women Painters & Sculptors, a small committee and I undertook to do an exhibit-in-print for the members. The Society, the oldest art group in Michigan, and the second oldest women’s art group in the US, was organized in 1903 by Lillian Meeser. It currently boasts about 120 members.
We put together a book of one piece for each of 80 members who wanted to be a part of this new idea. It is called “Folio” and is available from Lulu.com for purchase. Being a book lover, this just seemed a natural thing to do and I am very proud of the result.
It immediately came to mind that I would next like to be involved in doing another book. Instead of being a cross-section of a group, though, I wanted it to be a more in depth look at just a few artists’ works. Something more of a print portfolio of 20 works from each of us. That became the impetus of my current project “Figuratively Speaking…”
Drawing has always been a passion for me, and it seems natural to focus on that this time around. Because I’m in a figure group that draws from models at the local art center, it was easy to approach three other artists with talent that I tremendously respect. And, really, if I’m going to work with someone else, I want to work with people I also have a lot of fun with.
Incredibly, they have agreed to be a part of this. So we have been working feverishly on figure drawings for the last several weeks and are currently selecting which of those works will be included.
Needless to say I am having a great time, and learning yet more, too. Pushing me to do more work than I have been is honing my drawing skills. Then, not wanting to embarrass myself in front of people I think well of, my eye is becoming better attuned to what seems accurate and what makes a better piece. My critique of myself, while being gentle, is becoming more honest and improving me as an artist.
I am including a short video made of me as a promo/teaser for the book. We’re now looking to make a short video with the group—also as promotion. Stay tuned.
